In all of her books, Silver Ravenwolf's writing style is fun, frank, engaging, and accessible, and this one, To Light a Sacred Flame, is just as delightful as the others. 'Sacred Flame is chock full of magickal goodies, both for newcomers to the Craft and those of us who have been practicing it for years. Don't just plan to read it, however; walk the Path with her and do the work, and it will enrich your spirituality, whatever that might be. All of her books (and I have a few)in my collection are dog-eared, well-thumbed through, and much cherished.This one, no doubt, will suffer the same fate...

The title of my review just about explains it all; For each their own Path....And that is the very best thing I can say about any of Silver Ravenwolf's books. I have not had a chance to read this book from cover to cover as I am still working on a couple of her other books. I CAN honestly tell you that if this book moves along as the other three books of hers that I have read and work from so far, then this will not be a disappointment in content. I read most every review on alot of her books, including this one, prior to purchasing them and was quite shocked to find such disparity regarding her works from the Wiccan comminity. It seems you either love her or don't like her (the word 'hate' does not belong in the Wiccan world) and that's fine and so she states in every one of her books I have opened so far. She makes very clear that what she imparts may not be comfortable for you, stresses that you follow the path that is, gives excellant reading references to further your education as well as encourages you to explore as many different traditions/rites as you are comfortable with beyond what she provides in her works. As to myself personally, a fairly new practicing Solitary, I feel she communicates in an very comprehensive and fun manner that makes not only what she is trying to convey easier to read, but less restrictive in how it can make you feel about yourself and if your doing the right things or not. As one reviewer said, "Who smiles all the time", and even though she found it redundant to read in print, what she neglected to take away from her readings was that Silver's constant written reminders soon finds one that comes to terms with themselves within their own religious practices actually smiling alot more without printed reminders. She continually stresses that WICCA IS A RELIGION, that not everyone agrees at the same church in the Christian world and it's okay not to agree in the Wiccan world. And all her teachings stress the Wiccan Rede to 'harm none' and if my review has done nothing else, I hope it stands as a reminder to others writing reviews that a true Wiccan should limit themselves to "constructive criticism" or hold their tongues (computers). For those looking for an honest review, if you like Silver's other books, I can not see how her writing would disappoint in this book and recommend you purchase with confidence.

Rick Steves is an awesome resource for anyone who doesn't know where to start. I purchased this book for an impromptu trip to Madrid and Toldeo and could not be more grateful for having a guide to help start my planning. That said, I advise anyone who purchases this book to steer away from using it as your only travel resource.Here's what you should be wary of:- The food recommendations are not as accurate as I'd hoped. Instead of relying on this book, I'd advise searching through TripAdvisor or a similar site to read traveler reviews. Several of Steves' highlighted restaurants were rated 3 stars by people on TripAdvisor and Yelp, which is a shame when there are so many incredible places to eat in Madrid and Toledo.- Rick Steves doesn't like walking. It's so apparent that it's actually a running joke among many of my friends. If anything takes longer than 5-10 minutes to walk, he'll recommend taking a bus or a cab. Keep this in mind when using his book as a planning guide because he makes the distance seem a little more dramatic than it is in reality.- Single triangle attractions are still worth your time. Steves uses a rating system of triangles (instead of stars) to indicate which attractions deserve visits. This book in particular only has a few attractions with high ratings, which can easily make you assume there aren't great things to see in Madrid and Toledo. Don't let the triangles fool you! My boyfriend and I had a great time at the locations with 0-1 triangles.Overall, this book was well worth the money. The maps, insights, and attraction recommendations were all excellent resources as we struggled through our last minute planning. Having the physical book around while you're traveling is also wonderful, because you never know when you're going to be away from wifi. I highly recommend purchasing this book, so long as it's not your sole planning resource. :)

Good for Rick Steves style of writing and coverage of an area but a little dated and not as good as other writings, like his Barcelona Pocket Book. All black and white and no area map which saves money in production, but not as much fun or useful to use. Maps vary in quality, especially identifying landmarks and orientation. Steves needs to update this guide since these are amazing cities.

I just came back from 10 days in Spain, including Madrid and Barcelona. Considering the cost and effort of a vacation, it is worth doing your research and I bought the relevant books from Lonely Planet, Frommers and Rick Steves'. While each had points to offer, Rick Steves' guide is what I took with me every day and I used it most to plan my daily activities. I actually prefer its B&W format over the color format of the Lonely Planet books; while the color is visually nice, I found some of the white text on a colored background very hard to read. After all, these books are meant to be read and are not coffee-table art books. I also preferred the form-factor and slightly larger type face of the Steves' books over the Lonely Planet. I did use the Lonely Planet books for planning and to cross-check facts. Just as with movie or food reviews, you need to match your travel style to the reviewer and for me Steves' was best, with Lonely Planet a second. While every book comes with a map, I recommend buying a laminated and very detailed (but larger) Streetwise series map.

Overall an OK guide for a first visit to Madrid. However, a little to touristic for my taste in some of its choices to highlight. The El Escorial + Valle de los Caidos recommendation is quite sad. If you really like history, you would expend more time in el Escorial and not use the cheesy Bus-Tour combination of two sites that have absolutely no relation to each other historically or otherwise. Take the train in downtown Madrid and in 1 hour you will be in the Escorial train station. Take the local bus and in 5 minutes you will be in the town of El Escorial...and then you can decide how much time you should spend in the Escorial. From the austerity of the private lodgings of Felipe II to the stunning library that deserves some time to just look at the books that they have and if you are able to read a bit in latin (or in spanish) they have several books open that you can try to read something.Some comments about certain historical places and museums, making some easy jokes and calling propaganda to some historical inscriptions are out of place in this guide and that is why I put to this guide a 3 star even though in some aspects may be closer to a 4 star.The recommendation to visit the Sta Cruz Museum in Toledo is great, it is a fantastic place to visit and it is still for free. The sarcastic comments about how it is run...not so great....this is a fantastically preserved place in a very historic city. If you have to decide between visiting Sta Cruz or El Alcazar in Toledo. Please visit the Sta Cruz Museum, so much better choice!About Segovia...this is such an important historical place with over 2000 years of history!!...and this guide really does not take this wonderful little city seriously. This was heavily settled by the Romans who built an aqueduct that it is a very impressive and well-preserved feature of the city today. It was an important site for the Arabs during mid-medieval times. Segovia was the summer residence for the kings of Castille for centuries, it is so full of history!...and the Alcazar of Segovia absolutely deserves a visit. The military museum housed in one side of the Alcazar is a very interesting place if you like history, it is not all about weapons, it is also about development of new farming techniques, development of chemistry...etc..... Sad sad how the city of Segovia is treated as a very optional fast side trip in this guide....The cathedral is wonderful, it was built in the 16th century, but there are also other earlier important churches in the city.

This is a very good reference for planning your stay in Madrid. While you will not find a lot of detail, you will find enough to make choices and plan. You'll know generally where to go and what to see. I did not use it for specific hotels or dining. It's not really meant for that. It's more like asking a friend who's been ther what to do.

Alison Lurie has written a book, "The Language of Houses", on a subject that nearly everyone has an opinion - the way we see both "personal" architecture (our homes) and "public" architecture (the other buildings we encounter in our lives). It is an interesting, if not a bit bland, look at architecture.I really think we all have reactions to the spaces we're in - either temporarily (a public building or another person's home) or more lengthy (our own homes). Mostly these feelings are transient - we either like and feel comfortable in the space we're in...or we don't. And if we don't, we often try to leave as soon as possible. This was an important "jumping off point" for me when I began this book, and I read the entire book without receiving much in the way of that, despite the book's subtitle: "How Buildings Speak to Us".Ms Lurie does an excellent job at looking at the history of buildings and how they're constructed. She covers home styles as they've evolved from one room domains to modern homes with a room for everybody in the family. But she doesn't say much about how these homes affect the families that live within. I'm a compulsive viewer of house plans and love to consider how I could use the house as a home, while also thinking about how others could use it. Lurie writes a bit on how the modern home has moved from being filled with smallish rooms into designs with a lot of open spaces - the country kitchen, the second floor that opens up over the first floor, etc. She also examines how public buildings have evolved.Okay, one thing a decent reviewer of a book should NOT do is to bemoan what the author does NOT include in her book. And that's what I'm doing here. I would have loved for more opinions from Ms Lurie; I wanted some "spice". I'd have liked to see her flay those architects (and the committees who approved their designs) for buildings like Daniel Libeskind's Jewish Museum in Berlin which is a completely unusable home for a museum. Now, again, that's MY - violent - opinion. Many people love that building.So Alison Lurie has written a very good book about this history of our buildings. It's interesting reading and can heartily recommend it to the reader who wants the facts without the opinions.

I found The Language of Houses fascinating. I’d never realized how many powerful or subtle messages can be conveyed by varieties of rooms, arrangements within them, and by the surrounding whole of the structure. I was especially taken with Ms. Lurie’s repeated invoking of sociological and psychological issues relating to status, a factor of life we don’t often talk of directly today in our supposed classless society. Ms. Lurie shows us that the environments we create speak truths we hesitate to admit in words. I have read all of Alison Lurie’s novels and I find her clear and direct non-fiction style – enlivened further with satisfyingly humorous asides to the reader – presents her font of ideas and well-researched facts in as stimulating (or else soothing) a manner as descriptions of atmospheres, characters and characters’ motives in her novels. The Language of Houses well met my standard of a good read in non-fiction: encouraging me to look at things around me in a new way, to think of things I hadn’t before.

I rarely pass up the opportunity to read a book or article about residential architecture and what it reveals about our culture. I read and enjoyed Bill Bryson's "At Home", Witold Rybczynski's "Home", and Tracy Kidder's "House", but my favorite has always been Christopher Alexander et al.'s "A Pattern Language". If only Alison Lurie's "The Language of Houses" had any of the insight or power of observation of these excellent books. I read it in one sitting, paging through the chapters looking in vain for a single remark that went beyond the obvious. Very disappointing.

Frederick Taylor is a historian, not an economist. In "The Downfall of Money" he writes a history of Germany from 1914 to 1925 through the lens of the great inflation that befell that country. For example the German Mark falls from 4.2 to the dollar in August 1914 to nearly 7 trillion to the dollar by the end of 1923. He tells the story of how an ordinary wartime inflation which occurred in all of the major combatants turned into a hyperinflation in the postwar era as Germany was weighed down by reparations payments along with a social democratic imperative to fund the welfare state.He tells the story as to how the inflation impacted various stratas of society with big winners and big losers. The losers were well represented in the German middle-class who patriotically bought war bonds that were to become worthless and for many of them their wages failed to keep up with the inflation. The winners were farmers who held real assets and saw their debts erased by inflation along with the great industrialists who witnessed a stock market boom and the elimination of corporate indebtedness. By the end of the inflation the entire domestic debt of Germany was eliminated. To be sure the external debt was enormous.Along the way we witness the rise of the Freikorps, the killing of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht and the assasination of Walter Rathenau, a Jewish industrialist who served as foreign minister. There is also a cameo appearance of a demobilized corporal who would one day rule all of Germany.Harris certainly has a feel for the history of the period. However, I only wish he would have integrated charts and tables in the text in order to get a better understanding of what was going on in the macroeconomy. Further he should have spent more time discussing the stabilization program that came in 1924 that broke the inflation and of its consequences. Nevertheless the book is well worth the read.

This is an absolutely excellent book on inflation. The author starts with the fact that the Germans did not pay for the war with more taxes (which the US did mostly during WWII). It just printed money. This meant inflation, but it wasn't crippling. After the War, the Germans were in chaos with an attempted Communist takeover which was defeated followed by an attempted right wing takeover which was defeated by the SPD organized general strike. The SPD lead the government and was generous with social benefits even if it did not have the money to pay them. This meant more inflation. Now it was getting bad. But the clincher was the French/Belgian occupation of the Ruhr and the Ruhr workers going out on strike. The Weimar government continued to pay them. Nice sentiment, but you can't pay people and get no economic work in return. The result was the horrendous 1923 inflation which totally destroyed the German currency and Middle Class savings. One would think we would learn from this historical experience. But Argentina hasn't. It is going down the same inflationary path (without a war to blame it on). The Argentine Peso was 1 to 1 with the Dollar in 2000. It is 12 to the Dollar in Jan 2014......and worse is to come. These two case histories (Germany 1914-1923, Argentina 2000-2014) should be taught in every university economics curriculum. I hope that Frederick Taylor is writing a book about Argentina.

Most readers are aware of the hyper inflation that ravaged post World War I Germany but few understand the causes. This book does an excellent job explaining the government policies that resulted in this economic calamity. The book is also written in terms that readers unfamiliar with economics are able to understand.

At the worst of the hyper inflation a U.S. dollar was worth 3 billion marks. Workers were paid twice a day and their wives anxiously awaited the payments so they could run out buy whatever could be had.I found the most interesting part was the explanation of why solid middle class Germans followed Hitler. During WW1 they patriotically bought war bonds and invested in real estate, were landlords and had their savings as well as the bonds wiped out after the war. They associated the Weimar Republic and hence Democracy with this along with the "stab in the back" and turned not to the Left for remedy but to the Right where the National Socialists promised a better tomorrow and revenge on those who betrayed the Fatherland.There is a lot of dry economics and many lists of currency rates and prices to get through but it's well worth it. A terrific cautionary tale against an unsound economy.

Purchased this book expecting to understand the underlying conditions and economics that led to the infamous hyperinflation of Weimar Germany. Through ~125-150 pages there was nothing but politics and history of the WWI. If this is what I wanted, I would have bought a WWI book instead. Stopped reading around 125-150 pages.

Hyperinflation in Germany was a piece of history I wanted to learn and this book taught me well. If you don't think inflation is the evil that destroys the middle class and the society, then this book will convince you otherwise. It still breaks my heart thinking about some of the people in this book and what they had to endure between WWI and WWII.

this book was an insightfull and a really good read!I was a child, growing up in Germany after the 2nd world war and could identify with a lot of stuff in this book, especially the loss or exchange of money. It also gave me an insight of how and why Hitler came to power at that time in Germany and how the German people suffered after the 1st world war. After the 2nd world war (which in my view was a continuation of the 1st) the German people continued to suffer. My family were refugees from the East (now Ukraine) into Germany and were very very poor .and had to beg for food, mostly from the farmers

I read this many years ago (15+\-) and to this day I think of it as having had a pivotal affect on my view of the world and approach to life. This book changed me. I'm forever grateful to Mr Jensen for what I imagine a difficult and liberating piece to write. It all at once grounded and liberated my heart and soul. It was profound at the time, but only in realizing that 15 years of life and living (and reading) later it still holds the place that it does in my mind, do I realize HOW profound. How can you ever thank an author for that?!

Beautiful and elegant, the world speaks to us through the author and the world has chosen it's voice well. A gifted writer and lover (of the world), Jensen takes us by the hand and leads us on a journey inside the web of life, a place we haven't lived in too long, a place we need to return to if we are to claim our part in the dance. Jensen uses a pen but in his hand is a sword. He cuts to the heart of our destructive impulses and bleeds us dry, only to fill up our hearts again with the essence of all life yearning to be set free. The book made me weep. It broke my heart and then mended it. READ THE BOOK!

Psychic epidemics are far more devastating than natural catastrophes (earthquakes, hurricanes), and reason is powerless to resolve them, because reason does not communicate with the unconscious.The "language older than words" refers the voice of the living planet -- the wind, the burbling brook, the ravens, the howling wolves, the rattling leaves. Everything is communicating, sharing, cooperating. Unfortunately, civilized humans have isolated themselves from the rest of the family of life. We no longer listen to the ancient language, which is always talking to us. We have become space aliens in our own home. Not coincidentally, we are racing toward catastrophe.Most eco-writers do not reveal a spiritual connection to life on Earth. Jensen clearly does, and this adds much power to his work. Many years later, his father still refuses to acknowledge his violent past, and Derrick still has trouble sleeping. Jensen says that if he had to do his childhood over again, he would kill his father. He believes that it's essentially impossible to rehabilitate an habitual abuser.During the years of violent rage, the family members lived in a world of make believe, blocking out the fear and suffering. In order to survive the terror, they had to shut down emotionally. This family was not an unusual freak. Physical, emotional, and sexual abuse are commonplace in our society.In many ways, on a larger scale, our global civilization resembles Jensen's family. It's beating and raping our planet. Similarly, we feel powerless to stop the senseless savagery. We shut down emotionally. We pretend that everything is OK. We ignore vast amounts of information, and what we can't ignore, we forget or dismiss. Living behind a wall of fear, we become isolated from life, from our bodies, from our spirits. Isolation is poisonous.Humans are not essentially bad, but we have had the misfortune of being born into a culture that is speeding down the path of self-destruction. Jensen says: "Within any culture that destroys the salmon, that commits genocide, that demands wage slavery, most of the individuals -- myself included -- are probably to a greater or lesser degree insane." The central question of our time is this: "What are the sane and appropriate responses to insanely destructive behavior? In many ways, it is the only question of our time."One gift of Jensen's traumatic childhood was that it knocked off his cultural blinders. His father was a respected member of the community -- and he was also an abusive monster. Jensen came to the terrifying realization that our celebrated modern culture was as crazy and brutal as his dad. The first step on the path to healing is to acknowledge the existence of problems, to recognize the truth. Then, the process of awakening involves a series of deaths and rebirths, as useless things are tossed overboard, and replaced with healthier ones. It's about growth, and it's not quick or easy.This book is a dizzying non-linear tilt-a-whirl ride that zooms round and round in the insanity of our culture. It's a slideshow of stories, describing various outbreaks of the disease that's destroying the world -- the Sand Creek massacre, Peruvian dictatorships, the sadism of animal testing, devastating clear cuts, the destruction of the salmon, and on and on and on. He also includes stories about indigenous people who are eager to promote healing. He tirelessly explores many paths in search of coherence and understanding. It's a messy business. The results are not neat, clean, or consistent. Jensen explodes with pain, love, intelligence, and a burning hunger for a brighter tomorrow. I'd been reading some articles lately by Derrick Jensen, and always, I found them stunningly ... courageous ... because he constantly insisted on challenging us to consider, when-oh-when?, will we take the actions necessary to confront and at least 'try' to 'stop' the destruction of our planet. He's been blunt about his estimation of our chances, at this late date.This book seemed like a good place to start reading Jensen in earnest, but I'll have to let you know down the line whether it was. I can say this: I now feel a strong need to read of him more -- not to mention some of the books that were important to his thinking. Actually, I've already started: Jack D. Forbes; Hannah Arendt ...To unpack the parallel relationship Jensen sees between violent, domineering family violence and environmental-plus-genocidal depredation, Jensen tells the powerful stories from harrowing childhood experience, juxtaposed with 'thick descriptions' (Geertz)of personal interactions with animals, trees, stars and dreams, that demonstrate how seriously we need to take the sentience of the beings that surround us, in this 'more-than-human world' (Abram). All this in a clear, unvarnished, authentic voice -- just a lyrical voice. His honesty and willingness to take a stand repeatedly took my breath away. Now, given what we're up against, how can I do more????

For anyone serious about saving our planet for future generations, all of Derrick Jensen's works are a MUST READ. This one, in the form of a memoir, is lucid, timely, and unforgettable!

I found the plot a bit boring. Perhaps I didn't like it as much as the others in the series because Andy was acting more like an investigator rather than doing his usual lawyer thing. I found the whole religious cult kind of dumb ... the head is called a "Keeper" and he makes the town's decisions (marriages, occupations, etc.) by spinning a wheel. I thought the ending wrapped up really quickly. Andy suddenly figured it out and the bad person(s) caught ... done! I would have liked a bit more explanation as to why things had happened to wrap it up. During the book, Andy did some dumb things like meeting people but forgetting his cell phone. And since he was out of town, there was no interaction with his friends, Pete or Vince, which is comical ... Andy and Sam barely song-talked.The writing style was funny, sarcastic and amusing. It was written in first person perspective in Andy's voice. Each novel, though in dependent of the others ties through characters and events. The novels include Laurie, a young woman with whom Andy is smitten, Tara, his golden retriever, who Andy believes is the smartest dog in the world, along with other personable, identifiable, figures. With each successive story, Rosenfelt continues to add even more distinct personality traits to the very likeable characters.The Plot: After receiving a long distance call from Laurie, Andy decides to check out the case against a young man accused of murder in Wisconsin.Fabulous series!

Murder mystery on the light side; our hero is Andy Carpenter; a lawyer who cares; obviously a work of fiction. Andy is like an old fashioned gumshoe with a great sense of humor and irony along with a very clever mind and relatively hapless when it comes to physical confrontations. However he has lurking protective muscle in Marcus and his lady love is a police officer so he's covered. Highly recommend the Andy carpenter Series.

I have read two of the other books in this series and really liked them both. This is the best yet. It is a fascinating look at a self contained religious community in Wisconsin that is somehow involved in the murders of two local girls. The premise is a bit of a stretch but if you buy the premise its a fast moving, funny book. Tara Andy's Golden Retriever goes with the hero to see his old girlfriend who is now the police chief of the local town that includes the religious community. The author in real life has a rescue organization that has saved thousands of dogs from pounds. The humor is what sets this book apart. Humor is a rare component in any modern book and that makes Dead Center even more enjoyable. Andy just has a funny take on life. I am more of a PI or police procedural person than a courtroom drama fan but the author's take on trials and all that goes into a defense is interesting and detailed.

David Rosenfelt is my favorite author. If you're looking a dog lover, humor, murder and mayhem, his books are a must read. The characters are all unique and lovable. I've read all his books and am in the process of rereading them, that's how enjoyable his books are.

I bought this directly after finishing the author's 'Play Dead'. I enjoyed this just as much. Fast moving, no page-filler fluff. I will definitely be picking up another Andy Carpenter series novel.

This was the first book I read from this author. I found it a totally enjoyable read with the perfect amount of mystery, suspense and romance. It is light-hearted and warm. The characters are genuine. Andy Carpenter, the lawyer is so very likable and has a sense of humor that kept me smiling. I liked the way inwhich Tara, the golden retriever is part of the story. Marcus has a very small dialogue but is the most entertaining while hugely important to the plot. I look forward to reading more of this series

Andy and Tara are distressed as Laurie has moved to Wisconsin. Some time later Laurie asks Andy to come and consult on case she feels person arrested is not guilty. Andy runs into a town who religious beliefs are contray to the normal belief. This belief makes in investigation difficult as he not welcome to interview witnesses. There are a number of twists and turns in the story. The ending might surprise you.
